Jean Tsomelu The National Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Front party will meet this Saturday, November 9 in Yaounde. The Secretary General of the party, Senator Jean Tsomelou says the ordinary session will begin at 9.00 am, in the presence of all mayors and parliamentarians.
Although the agenda of the meeting has not been discussed, many pundits believe one of the issues to be raised is in connection to the triple elections announced this year by the Head of State.
There have been fears raised by political parties and members of the civil society in relation to a possible extension of mandates of mayors and parliamentarians this month.
Some hint that the constitution could be modified this year by the National Assembly as they meet in a session this November, to give room for the President to extend the mandate of Parliamentarians, mayors and councillors.
If this comes to past, President Biya will be extending mandates of both mayors, parliamentarians and municpal councillors for a second time.
In a decree issued in July 29, the Head of State declared intentions for local elections to 2020. It read " the mandate of municipal councillors elected on September 30,2013 has been extended until February 29,2020.
This comes after the Head of State on the 13th of June 2018, addressed the head of Senate, asking him to convene the Upper house in relation to an extension of mandates of mayors, councillors and parliamentarians from October 29, 2018.
Cameroon's political climate remains tense as opposition party Cameroon Renaissance Movement, continue to organise rallies despite all government efforts to stop them. On the other hand, Separatists are battling the government at home and abroad, demanding sovereignty over the two Anglophone regions.
It is believed that the current tension in the country has been the reason behind the extension of mandates of these politicians. Cameroon is bracing up to hold legislative, municipal and regional elections.
